What is the CSS Exam?
The CSS stands for Central Superior Services. CSS is a competitive examination in Pakistan conducted by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC). It is a prestigious exam that aims to recruit individuals for various posts in the federal government.

The civil service is also known as the Central Superior Services (CSS) or Civil Service. This is an elite, permanent body that oversees the administration of the Cabinet of Pakistan’s directorates and government secretariats.
FPSC CSS Syllabus
In 2015, the CSS Exam syllabus was updated. Exams in subsequent years will be subject to the updated syllabus. It is a roadmap for getting ready for the CSS Exam. A candidate needs to completely read the syllabus before taking the CSS Exam. It supports appropriate preparation methods as well as subject choices.
The syllabus contains a complete CSS subjects list, both compulsory and optional. Groups of subjects comprise the optional subjects. The candidate is required to choose a single optional subject for each group of subjects. A total of 600 marks in optional subjects must be chosen. A subject has one paper with 100 marks. There are two papers in a subject with 200 marks total—100 points each.
CSS Subjects List
- Every topic will have two papers, each worth 100 marks, out of a possible 200. Other subjects will have a single paper. Every paper will last for three hours.
- The compulsory and optional papers, with the exception of essays, applied mathematics, and pure mathematics papers, should prepare applicants for some objective type questions * (MCQs).
- The answers to the question papers in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, as well as other regional languages spoken in Pakistan (Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi), should be provided in those languages. However, answers to questions about translating from the target language into English or vice versa should follow the instructions on the question paper. Only English or Urdu may be utilized for replies to the Islamic Studies or Comparative Study of Major Religions question paper. When otherwise specified in the Question Paper, all other papers must be answered in English. If these guidelines are violated, the papers will be canceled and the offending paper(s) will receive ZERO marks.
- Candidates who are not Muslims might choose to take Comparative Study of Major Religions or Islamic Studies.
- A candidate will not be allowed to appear in any more examination papers if they do not appear in any required or elective subjects.
- A total score of 120 out of 300 is required to pass the three General Knowledge papers (GK-I, GK-II, and GK-III).
- Each paper has Part I (Objective part) and Part II (Subjective part). Part I is attempted on a separate sheet which is collected back after 30 minutes.
- Qualifying marks for the compulsory paper are 40% and for the optional paper is 33%.

CSS Optional Subjects
The required minimum for optional courses will be an honors degree from a Pakistani university. As per the guidelines in column 1 below, candidates must choose six optional subjects totaling six hundred marks from the following groups:

CSS Age Limit
Relaxation of age Criteria: The CSS exam has an age range of 21 to 30 years. The following candidates have their age restriction lowered by two years, making them 32 years old. A candidate who has worked for the government for at least two years and is currently employed by them.

Follow the following steps for applying for the CSS Exam:
- Deposit the exam fee in the nearest Govt. Treasury / State Bank of Pakistan / National Bank of Pakistan.
- Fill in the ‘Online Application Form’ on the official website of FPSC. Take a printout (hard copy) of the same online application.
- Dispatch the hard copy of the online form along with copies of your documents and bank receipt to the FPSC headquarter, in Islamabad.
- Your complete application must reach FPSC headquarter, Islamabad within 10 days of the closing date.
Online application through the FPSC official website is compulsory for the CSS Exam. Remember the following points for applying online:
- Personal information, CNIC number, bank information, names of elective subjects, educational background, work history, and post preferences are all required for the online application.
- All of this information must be provided accurately and with care by the applicant.
- Once the application has been completed, click the “SUBMIT” button at the bottom.
- An email confirming your application will be sent to you after it is submitted. The tracking ID for your application is also included in the same email.
- Using your CNIC number and the application’s tracking ID, you can click “Take Printout” to print a copy of your completed application.
